In the article, ‘Leadership Through Communication’, Katz (2013) stated that communication has integral role in shaping the leadership. According to her power of communication cannot be underestimated, however to get the benefit it is needed to make conscious efforts. For supporting her statement, Kart (2013) pointed out need of effective internal communication, involvement of public, and development of relationship for tomorrow. She stated that effective internal communication helped in making employees come together. Involvement of public through continuous communication created awareness about challenges and opportunities. For that she stated that how two-way communication helped in getting support of public and how they effectively participate in decision making. She also stated that communication strategy helps in development of relationship for tomorrow. The communication strategy helps in making people educated and involved in the process. Article highlights that through effective communication with internal team and public (customers) effective relationship can be built and people can be led to participate in certain activity.
In the other article, ‘Developing holistic leaders: Four domains for leadership development and practice’, Quatro, Waldman, and Galvin (2007) stated that specific leadership development programs and modern management education helps in development of holistic leaders. They also stated that such holistic leaders are can operate effectively in analytical, conceptual, emotional, and spiritual, all domains of leadership. They stated about need of specific skills for performing certain leadership practice. For analytical leadership practice, they highlighted that leaders need skills, like logical reasoning, quantitative analysis, and decisiveness. The conceptual leadership practice needed the skill of curiosity, creativity, and qualitative analysis. For emotional leadership it is needed that leader should have persuasive communication, self-monitoring and empathetic understanding. The spiritual leadership practice generally stated to require integrity, self-reflection and meditative thinking. The article highlights the point that specific skills or traits of the leaders helps them in ensuring effective leadership.
Application of Evidence to Problem/Issue
From the analysis of the Everest Simulation, it has been found that communication between the team members and among leader and team members is significantly important. In order to lead the people, it is also needed that leader should have accuracy and efficiency in communication. It has been also stated by Katz (2013) effective internal communication can help employees to come together. Thus, if effective internal communication can be established within the team I could get much effective support from team members. Katz (2013) also stated the need of continuous communication with the public to develop needed understanding and create awareness about challenges and opportunities. Thus, through such approach I could have effectively interact with my team members and others. Also some of my team members, who are good in English, could understand the challenges faced by other team members who do not understand or speak English well.
Through the simulation I came to understand that efficiency and accuracy of communication is also important to make the people understand the decision and support leader in decision making. It also confirmed by Katz who stated that communication strategy helps in increasing education and involvement of people within the process. Through the communication efficiency effective leadership can be developed and team members can be made educated about decision. Also leading the team with effective communication skill can increase their involvement in task process. Quatro, Waldman, and Galvin (2007) stated that emotional leadership requires persuasive communication, self-monitoring and empathetic understanding. It confirms that if persuasive communication skill can be developed I could be able to develop emotional relationship with team members. I could also get desired support from them. Through communication we could understand each other well. An effective understanding will help in increasing personal and group both performance.
Ethics and Social Responsibility
Another important issue I found is that sometimes there are conflicts between individual objectives and team goals. In certain situation we needed to make decision where individual goals may need to be sacrificed. It may also require that group goals should be given preference. Situation come in group task when it is ethical dilemma appears. In that situation either decisions are needed to made on basis of theoretical norms or on basis of own understanding. Leader should analyses probabilities and try to make an ethical decision. Furthermore, in a more complex commercial situation, more than making ethical decisions, leader must consider more to satisfy the Triple Bottom Line which centrals to cooperate social responsibility. Ethics are generally related to behavior of the individual, while the social responsibility aspect is related to organizational level obligation. In the simulation task it was needed to make certain decision or take action, which is linked with welfare or interest of others or overall group.
